What is Tarot?

The Tarot is a deck of cards containing four suits which are similar to the suits in conventional playing cards. The suit names are also similar to those in conventional decks. There are wands (clubs), cups (hearts), pentacles (diamonds), and swords (spades). Each suit contains ten pip cards numbered one to ten, and four face cards (one more than found in conventional decks). The four face cards usually feature a king, a queen, a knight, and a page. Suit names, as well as court card names, can vary with the deck used.

What makes the Tarot special is its trump cards. These are twenty-two cards numbered one through twenty-one and including The Fool which, if numbered, is zero. These cards each have a picture that depicts a different aspect of human experience. Some scholars believe the trump cards are arranged like a Roman Triumph. Triumphs were held upon the return of Roman heroes. The lowliest person captured during a campaign would be first in line, followed by others in order of their importance. The hero himself would enter the city last and most lauded. The trump cards are said to work in the same manner, each card trumping the one previous.

While the Tarot was developed in the 15th century, its use for divination wasn't popularized until the 1700s. Now numerous decks have been created, and most are used for purposes of divination. There are many different approaches to using Tarot cards, and readers come out of a variety of backgrounds.  Whether you are Christian, Wiccan, Muslim, or Hindu, the Tarot can enhance your experience of life.

The purpose of the Tarot in divination is not telling the future.  Free will makes this goal impossible. The cards are not an object of worship, they are a tool for better understanding the self.
